As a parent, you want to do everything to help your child succeed in life. As a high school teacher, I find that there are some skills that students lack. One of the best things you can teach them is important life skills. Not only do these skills set them up to be successful in school, but in many other aspects of life.
Here are five important life skills that every child should know:
- How to handle money. This includes budgeting, saving, and spending. You need to manage your money wisely in order to succeed in life.
- Motivate them to save up for things they want.
- Help them understand the value of money by showing them how much many things cost.
- Inspire them to think about creative and honest ways to earn extra money for themselves.
This life skill is incredibly important to develop. Especially with inflation, understanding money and being financially responsible is more important than ever. If you want to look into more ways to encourage this skill, check out my guest post about how to develop financial literacy!
- How to be responsible for their actions and decisions. This is an important skill for dealing with difficult situations. It’s also essential for making excellent decisions throughout their lives. Some practical ways to teach them about accountability include:
- Help them understand that there are consequences for their actions.
- Encourage them to take responsibility for their own decisions.
- Teach them to think about how their actions will affect others.
- Lead by example and take responsibility for choices and actions.
There are many people in the world that don’t consider the effects of their actions or consider the impact of their actions on other people. By teaching your child to be responsible for their actions and decisions, they will not only be successful in their future, they will a considerate human being – which is invaluable.
- How to deal with difficult situations and emotions. This is an important skill for dealing with stress, anxiety, and other challenges in life. It’s also essential for maintaining healthy relationships. Students are experiencing increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and lack of emotional awareness. Working with kids to develop this life skill is incredibly important to their success in school and life.
- Help them understand their feelings by labeling emotions.
- Provide support and understanding when they’re going through tough times.
- Encourage them to talk to you or another trusted adult about their problems.
- Model healthy coping mechanisms such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, or journaling.
- How to get along with others and work together. This is an important skill for dealing with conflict, building relationships, and working effectively in a team. Some tips for teaching your kids to get along with others include:
- Encourage them to listen to others and share their ideas.
- Teach them how to compromise and resolve conflicts.
- Motivate them to cooperate with others and work together towards a common goal.
- Praise them when they display positive social behaviors.
A great way to develop the ability to work with others is to start socializing at a young age. There are tons of programs for toddlers and some are free as well.
- How to stay mentally and physically healthy. This is an essential skill for staying healthy. It’s also necessary for managing stress and emotions.
- Motivate your kids to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly.
- Prepare them on how to deal with stress in healthy ways.
- Teach your kids how to practice good hygiene by demonstrating how to take care of themselves and their living space.
- Allow them to take part in sports and group activities.
These are five of the most important life skills that every child should know. By teaching your kids these skills, you’ll set them up to handle difficult situations and make thoughtful decisions throughout their lives.

Totally agree with this list! This is another reason I love homeschooling so much. Lots of time to work on those life skills!
I love this list! There are so many important things we need to teach the next generation, and these are all great places to start! Kids need to be taught a lot more than just math and science, they need to learn how the world works and how they fit into that ever-changing world. <3
