Growing up, I have always been super into mythology, learning about the different cultures, gods, and monsters. With that in mind, I have found a few books that are based on mythology that have sucked me back into an old interest that I’ve had. Below are 7 mythology based books to read.

1. Lore Olympus
This series started as a webtoon that grew in popularity so much that the author was able to publish their cartoons into graphic novels. The art is gorgeous, the love story of Persephone and Hades, and the details of mythology are interwoven so well.
2. Circe
Circe is a great mythology based book that provides a female perspective from the witch Circe. It is the second book by Madeline Miller, who also wrote The Song of Achilles (which is later on the list). The writing of this book is gorgeous and really draws the reader into the mythological world.
3. Argos
This mythology based book reframes the journey of Odysseus through the viewpoint of his dog, Argos. Taking this classic myth and reframing it provides a fresh telling of the story.
4. The Song of Achilles
This book is another title by Madeline Miller. In fact, it’s the book that really propelled the author into being a huge success. The Song of Achilles takes on a take of the Iliad through the perspective of Achilles’ close friend.
5. Percy Jackson series
I feel like the Percy Jackson series is the original mythology based series. I remember reading this series while I was in high school and I absolutely loved the series. It’s a shame that the movies were garbage. But Disney plus is supposed to be making a new series, so there’s hope for redemption!
6. Lore
Mythology in the modern age – yes please! The idea is that gods are put into the mortal world to be hunted and there are hunters from ancient bloodlines that strive to get the immortality and power from these hidden gods. This story takes place in New York City and provides an insight into the dynamics from various mythological heroes and gods.
7. Bull
This in verse book makes for a quick read and it is so engaging. It centers around the myth of the minotaur and has several perspectives represented. Not only are there different perspectives, but the author also uses different poetry formats for each individual to solidify the different characters throughout the myth.

As a teacher, I’ve found that students LOVE mythology. In fact, for my sophomore English class, we did a multicultural mythology unit. They were so engaged and into the assignments, I was blown away! So my new classroom library goal is to add more mythology books into my selection for students to check out on reading days.
