Previously, I posted about some activities to reduce screen time for toddlers. One of my go-to, low-prep activities is creating some homemade moon sand for my daughter to play with. The best part about this is that it only takes 2 ingredients! And lasts FOREVER!

Homemade Moon Sand Base Recipe
- 2 cups of flour
- ½ cup of vegetable oil
That’s it. Then you just mix the two ingredients together!
The thing that I love about the homemade moon sand is that you can customize it however you’d like.
Colorful Moon Sand Additions:
If you want to have different colors of moon sand, all you need to do is either add in food coloring or a Kool-aid packet.
Scented Moon Sand Additions:
- Essential oils
- Flavored extract
Another fun change you can make to homemade moon sand is to make it scented, using essential oils or flavored extracts! Keep in mind that if you use essential oils, the moon sand isn’t as edible as it was before, so I would recommend saving essential oils for toddlers that don’t put things into their mouths.
Specific Recipes
I made birthday cake moon sand for my daughter’s second birthday and it was a huge hit for the toddlers at the party. I just made sure to have a big bin of it and put some toys on the side for them to play with.
Birthday Cake Additions:
Strawberry Lemonade Additions:
- Strawberry extract
- Lemon extract
- Red food coloring
- Yellow food coloring
- Pink sugar sprinkles
- Yellow sugar sprinkles
Winter/Christmas Additions:
The possibilities are endless when mixing up homemade moon sand! You can change up moon sand to match the upcoming holiday or season, which keeps toddlers interested when things keep changing up.
If you create moon sand, you can store it in an airtight container to keep for a few weeks!
