Toys for 4 Month Old Babies

When babies start to turn 4 months old is possibly one of my favorite ages with an infant. They are starting to reach for items, be more expressive, and are not just simply sleeping all the time! This is the point where I feel that I need to start breaking out the toys for my 4 month old – to look, reach, and chomp on. Here’s some of my favorite toys that I’ve used with my own babies once they reached 4 months old.

Big Toys for 4 Month Old Babies

Play gym

This is one that I began using around 2 to 3 months for my second baby, as it’s a nice way for them to be entertained up and see things up close. Plus it provides the option to set up for tummy time as well! I was able to use the Lovevery one with my first baby – as someone let us borrow it – and I can say that while it is aesthetically pleasing and has great toys, you can also find cheaper ones that are just as great. I bought this one for my second baby and he absolutely loves it! The mirror leaf is the part that he enjoys the most! There is a lot of parents that absolutely love the Kick & Play Piano Gym if you’re looking for something that is even more engaging for your little one.

Play mat

Along with the play gym, a play mat is a great purchase for a 4 month old to play with. It makes tummy time a little more manageable at this age. I love our foldable play mat for when babies get a little more mobile and need more space too!

This is also recommended for when baby hits 6 months old too – so it is definitely a long-term purchase!

Wooden play gym

Something I love to use with the play mat is a wooden, collapsible play gym to entertain baby on the big play mat too!

Small Toys for 4 Month Old Babies

Mickey Mouse stroller toy

We bought this because it is so cute – but the black and white colors of Mickey also draw babies attention since they see contrasting colors at first! Plus the sounds and textures are super interesting for them to start reaching and crinkling the toy.

Penguin teether

This toy right here – my baby boy gets SO excited when he sees it. I love that it has the bar inside for him to get a good grip on so he can just chew and chew on it!

Giraffe teether

A Sophie giraffe teether is such a cute and fun toy to have around! I feel like now, it’s super common to have one as well. It’s extra cute since my son was a giraffe for his first Halloween too <3

Banana toothbrush

This banana toothbrush is great to chew on, but also encourages dental hygiene.

Rattle

A classic baby toy – a rattle! I love a soft rattle, so when the baby starts swinging the rattle, if it hits on the face, it doesn’t hurt too bad.

Rainbow ring

We have a rainbow ring teether from Lovevery that has always been a favorite between my two babies. I think that babies start to colors around this age and that makes this rainbow teether awesome! This is a great dupe for it – as it has a similar structure and the bright colors!

Books

As an English teacher, exposing my kids to books has always been something I’m passionate about. Reading is one of the easiest and best ways to prepare kids for their futures – expanding vocabulary, caregiver time, imagination building, creativity, all the positives.

With that, I love the Indestructible books that are made for babies to play with. They can be drooled on, crinkled, bent, all the stuff that would ruin a normal book, which is why I consider these as one of the best toys for 4 month old babies!

Eating Prep Toys for 4 Months Old

Spoons

Hitting 4 months old means that food is a soon possibility. I like to expose my babies to things related to eating, such as the spoons that we use to eat. There are lots of different styles to choose from – the ones I recommend are these funky shaped ones and these classic ones

Food pacifier

A mesh food pacifier is another great toy for 4 month old babies! I personally like the silicone ones, and once baby starts eating, I’ll be filling it with berries and fruit!

Cups

Another easy food prep toy for four month olds are flexible cups. My babies love to squish them and chew on them, plus they get used to cups this way too.

Four months old is such a fun age, where toys actually start to get played with by the baby! Having a wide range of toys is great to help babies learn new textures, sounds, and cause and effect.
